Global football icon Cristiano Ronaldo surprised many by investing in Perplexity AI, a search company valued at around $20 billion, according to reports from The Information and Reuters.
While the precise terms of the deal remain confidential, the partnership has elevated Perplexity’s profile further into the mainstream, and is expected to accelerate its mission to redefine how we search and discover information online.
Perplexity AI, launched in 2022 by a team including Aravind Srinivas, Denis Yarats, Johnny Ho, and Andy Konwinski, has crafted a conversational search experience that combines advanced AI with real-time sourcing.
The timing of Ronaldo’s investment aligns with Perplexity’s surge in valuation, propelled by new funding rounds in 2023 and 2024. In September 2025 alone, the startup secured approximately $200 million in fresh capital, confirming its status as a major player in an increasingly crowded AI ecosystem.
Beyond such financial boost, Ronaldo’s involvement brings a powerful alignment with culture. Perplexity launched a dedicated Cristiano Ronaldo hub, featuring content such as rare images, interactive highlights, and Q&A sessions for millions of his fans worldwide. This approach not only extends Perplexity’s reach but also signals a new method of fan engagement.
Strategically, this partnership offers Perplexity access to Ronaldo’s vast global audience numbering in the hundreds of millions, opening doors to new revenue channels like fan subscriptions and exclusive merchandise.
However, the collaboration is not without its complexities. Celebrity investments can amplify scrutiny and increase reputational risk, especially with undisclosed financial details that invite speculation about governance. Yet, for Perplexity, the trade-off comes with opportunities to broaden its commercial partnerships across sports and media sectors, further blurring the lines between technology and culture.
Ronaldo’s stake in Perplexity also highlights a novel creator monetization model. AI platforms hosting curated hubs enable celebrities to sustain and expand their brand value beyond traditional social media, by offering fans personalized engagement rooted in both content and utility.
